There are times when it is so easy to get caught up in heavy learning when it comes to Bible study. With all the resources available thanks to the wonders of the Internet, becoming an amateur theologian and Bible scholar isn’t as remote a possibility as it once was.

The thing is, without heart, all that head stuff just becomes another human pastime. It’s great to be knowledgeable in the Bible--this website is dedicated to that! But we must remember that the Bible is the Word of God and that spending time with it is spending time with God.

Much has been taught in the way of praying with scripture, but sometimes it’s just good to hold on to a few phrases or verses on an entirely motivational level. In our age of distractions, instant gratifications, and debates, it’s refreshing to have something in mind that is uplifting and oriented towards God.

For my wife and I, a phrase we took to heart is found in the Book of Joshua:

But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Joshua 24:15

It’s one of those Biblical snippets that just speaks on its own. No need for deep exegetical debate or years of study in ancient cultures. Just a simple statement that we can go to no matter what we’re going through.

My wife and I like to say it to each other where one of us starts the quote off and the other finishes it. Some might say it’s even a bit romantic. The thing is, as we have grown together in marriage, making a home together, and raising kids, it’s a beautiful statement that is akin to a family motto.

When we faced the uncertainties of 2020, my wife and I found ourselves many times running through scenarios of “what if?” and “what will we do?” and yet, we knew we were facing those uncertainties together with God at our center. We reminded ourselves that we serve the Lord.

As our family has grown so has our affinity for this statement. I often start off with “As for me and my house…,” to which she replies, “…we will serve the Lord.” It continues to remind us that just as we made it through those difficult times back in 2020 we will make it through the difficulties of today. It gives us profound hope for the future, one in which we, as a household, serve the Lord.

God bless you.
